Fortis Hospital, Mohali Gets JCI

Fortis Hospital, Mohali has recently acquired accreditation from Joint Commission International (JCI). The Hospital took 18 months to prepare for the accreditation and spent Rs 1.2 crore on infrastructural changes for it. The 209-bed hospital is a super speciality cardiac hospital and the first hospital of the Fortis Healthcare Ltd.

Speaking to Express Healthcare, Daljit Singh, President-Strategy and Organisational Development, Fortis Healthcare Limited, said, "The starting point was October 2005, when a GAP analysis was conducted by US-based consultant Graham Gooch and Associates to assess our preparedness for JCI. Later on, the implementation and follow-ups were done by our in-house team." A core team of 15 people were formed for this purpose. The Group tackles quality on two levels—one at the corporate level to strategise and plan quality initiatives and another at the individual hospital level for day-to-day implementation and follow-ups. The key areas on which the Hospital had to work upon for JCI were patient safety, attendant safety, employee safety, fire safety, service processes, documentation and OPD operations.

"The initiative involved months of training of employees of all departments, so that everybody had a good understanding of quality and what their role was in it, " added Daljit.

The reason for going for JCI is not to attract more international patients, insists Daljit. "We were not looking at any short-term benefits. We want to position ourselves as a globally reputed healthcare organisation renown for clinical excellence and quality care," said Daljit. Escort Heart Institute, New Delhi is also preparing for JCI. "In fact, the GAP analysis was done during the time of Mohali, but we could not take it further due to various reasons. Now we are actively looking at it," informed Daljit.

Four more Fortis Hospitals are slated for NABH accreditation soon.
