G Kuppuswamy Naidu Memorial Hospital (GKNM) hospital was established in 1952 at Coimbatore. Today, the hospital is a large tertiary, super-specialty 544-bed hospital offering a wide range of world class healthcare services at affordable cost to the community. With a focus on education and training, the hospital is recognised for National Board of Examinations for DNB Programme. The hospital strives to provide the highest possible standards of medical care and service to the community. According to Dr Ramkumar Raghupathy, Dean, "The hospital has obtained the prestigious NABH Accreditation from the National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare providers - Quality Council of India, New Delhi, the highest national recognition for the delivery of quality and safe medical services."

The hospital is the first healthcare provider in Tamil Nadu to be awarded this coveted recognition and so far only 26 other hospitals in the whole country have been accredited by the NABH.

NABH Requirements

The National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare providers was established in 2005. It is a constituent board of Quality Council of India, set up to establish and operate accreditation programmes for healthcare organisations. It is structured to cater to the needs of the patients and set benchmarks for the progress of the health industry. The NABH accreditation calls for compliance to its stringent standards comprising of 503 objective elements.

A two-member team conducted a pre-assessment for two days and gave us the feedback on our compliance to the standards. The final assessment was conducted by a five member team for three-days in GKNMH. The assessment included interviews with patients, their attendees and the hospital staff.

The entire gamut from infrastructure, medical and nursing services, documentation practices, equipment, support services, infection control practices, patient feedback and action taken, HR practices, employee awareness and training to quality assurance activities, compliance to all statutory requirements etc were audited as required by the NABH standards.
